Not too far from us lie three lakes that are a haven for bird-watchers. Find calm in the symphony created by the rippling lake, the rustling leaves and the chirps of birds.
The first of the lakes to be visited is the Yoda Wewa. Once a vast expanse of dry zone low land, the Ruhuna Royalty converted it into a water retention facility. Today, it is a tank that supports a diverse ecosystem of variety of birds. It is located about 3km away from the Tissamaharama Town on the Tissamaharama – Kirinda Road.
Next up, is Tissa Wewa. Situated at the North of Tissamaharama, this beautiful expansive artificial lake was built by King Kavantissa in the 2nd century BC. The tank hosts a variety of aquatic birds including bitterns, herons & egrets skimming across the waters shaded by a series of majestic Margosa trees.
The last of the three lakes is Debara Wewa. Covered on the surface with beautiful water lilies, it is abuzz with bird-life. Situated close to a bustling village, the lake still makes space for enough birds, butterflies and dragonflies to blow your mind.
