Galle Fort ~

Come with us to the historic port city of Galle. As a port city, Galle’s history is believed by some to go as far back as the time of the biblical King Solomon. Though there is no historic data to substantiate this claim, it has been suggested that the city of Tarshish, where the King is said to have obtained various gemstones, spices and scented wood, is none other than the city of Galle. The natural harbour became the country’s main port, and centre of trade and commerce among Persians, Arabians, Greeks, Romans, Malays and Indians, during the period of colonization by the Portuguese and Dutch.
